Present Rajasthan was under 19 princely states, 3 bases and one union territory i.e. the administration was directly under the British before independence. After the integration of the princely states in seven phases after independence, the formation of Rajasthan was completed according to the constitution and on November 1, 1956, by appointing the Governor of Rajasthan in place of Rajpramukh, the Government of India also abolished the last goal of monarchy.

The first phase of integration of Rajasthan started with the formation of Matsya Union on March 18, 1948 by integrating Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur and Karauli.

On March 25, 1948, Rajasthan Union was formed by integrating Kota Bundi, Jhalawar, Tonk, Dungarpur, Banswara, Pratapgarh, Kishangarh and Shahpura and Maharao of Kota was appointed as Rajpramukh.

Third phase - On April 18, 1948, Udaipur merged with the Rajasthan Union and Udaipur Maharana was made Rajpramukh and Maniklal Verma the Chief Minister.

Fourth phase - On March 30, 1949, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer were merged into Rajasthan Union, the king of Jaipur was made Rajpramukh and Hiralal Shastri was appointed as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

Fifth phase- On May 15, 1949, Matsya Union was merged with Greater Rajasthan.

Sixth phase- Merger of Sirohi princely state, except Abu Dilwara is completed.

Seventh phase- On November 1, 1956, Abu Delwara was separated from Bombay and re-united with Rajasthan and now all the princely states and Ajmer-Merwada were merged to form Rajasthan and ending the monarchy tradition, instead of Rajpramukh, the head of the state was given the post of Governor. In this way Rajasthan was formed by ending the independent princely states.
